The primary responsibility for ensuring that curriculum development and documentation meets the standards of the College lies with the Chair of the area. Significant program and course changes should be discussed with the appropriate Advisory Committee. The procedure for proposing curriculum changes is as follows:

New Course. A course is considered a new course when a) it is being offered for the first time or b) a significant content and/or credit hour change is made to an existing course. This requires a course approval form to be submitted and reviewed through the following approval steps:

  • Chair of the area in which the course originates,
  • Curriculum Committee, and
  • Associate Dean of Instruction.

Once approved, new course numbers are assigned by the Syllabi Specialist in consultation with the Chair of the area in which the course originates.

Course Revision. A revision to an existing course requires a course approval form to be submitted and reviewed through the following approval steps:

  • Chair of the area in which the course originates, and
  • Associate Dean of Instruction.

However, if any TWO of the course title, course description, or course objectives are changed, the approval steps are the same as that for a new course:

  • Chair of the area in which the course originates,
  • Curriculum Committee, and
  • Associate Dean of Instruction.

New Program and Program Revision. A new program or program revision requires a program approval form to be submitted and reviewed through the following approval steps:

  • Chair of the area in which the program originates,
  • Curriculum Committee,
  • Associate Dean of Instruction, and
  • Dean of Academic and Student Affairs.

New programs and program options also require approval by the:

  • College President,
  • Board of Regents,
  • Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education,
  • Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and
  • Accrediting agencies as needed.

Curriculum Change Proposal Procedures. The Syllabi Specialist uses the following procedure for processing proposed curriculum changes:

  • After reviewing, the Syllabi Specialist will forward the proposed change to the Curriculum Committee for consideration if necessary. The submitting Chair is requested to attend the Curriculum Committee meeting during which his/her proposed changes will be considered.
  • The Syllabi Specialist will forward the proposed change to the Associate Dean of Instruction for consideration.
  • The Syllabi Specialist facilitates additional approval procedures as required for each type of curriculum change.
  • Approved changes are implemented by the Syllabi Specialist as appropriate:
  • update the CARS catalog,
  • update the college catalog,
  • create or update the syllabus on the college network.
  • The Syllabi Specialist notifies the submitting Chair whether or not the proposed change is approved and provides applicable documentation.

It is the goal that proposed changes are processed by the end of the month following the month they were submitted.
