Course numbers are assigned by the person responsible for the maintenance of the CARS catalog in the Registrar module with input from the Registrar. Course numbering is based upon the department from which the course is taught and the level of instruction. The prefix will be from the department that has originated the course. Developmental courses will have numbers less than 100, first year courses generally have numbers between 100-199, and second year courses generally have numbers between 200-299. Course numbers are based on course content, credits earned, etc. and are not based upon method or location of instruction.

The Registrar assigns section numbers based on information provided by Department Chairs about the method(s) of instruction. The Registrar also attaches appropriate charge codes:

  • Section numbers 01 to 29 are used for face-to-face credit class sections taught on campus. (Charge code = TUIT or a program-specific charge code.)
  • Section 3x is used for distance education hybrid class sections that meet 30% to 74% of the required instructional time through technology other than online such as teleconferencing. (Charge code = TUIT or a program-specific charge code.)
  • Section 4x is used for distance education hybrid class sections that meet 30% to 74% of the required instructional time online. (Charge code = WEB.)
  • Section 5x is used for distance education class sections that meet 75% or more of the required instructional time through technology other than online such as teleconferencing. (Charge code = WEB.)
  • Section 6x is used for distance education class sections that meet 75% or more of the required instructional time online. (Charge code = WEB.)
  • Section 70-74 is used for dual credit classes taught for high school students by a high school instructor, whose qualifications are approved by STC, regardless of location or mode of delivery. Students receive both STC and high school credit. (Charge code = DC.)
  • Section 75-79 is used for dual enrollment classes taught for high school students by an STC instructor regardless of location or mode of delivery. Students may or may not receive high school credit in addition to STC credit. (Charge code = DE.)
  • Section 8x is used for internship and clinical class sections. (Charge code = TUIT or a program-specific charge code.)
  • Section 99 is used for independent study class sections. The regular course curriculum is taught, but meeting days and times are established as needed. (Charge code = TUIT or a program-specific charge code.)

Notes:

1. The above section 3x, 4x, 5x, and 6x definitions are consistent with HLC and Learning House definitions of distance education, online, and hybrid classes.

2. Learning House: The current contract with Learning House specifies that STC pay Learning House 20% of gross revenue for any section 6x distance education online classes and section 4x distance education hybrid online class sections hosted by Learning House.

3. AJA@TMSTC:

  • Sections 01 through 59 require AJA@TMSTC.
  • Section 60 and higher require only an Academic Grade.

4. Non-credit SEM seminar classes that are part of a college degree or certificate program are assigned section numbers that are appropriate for the delivery method and have unique charge codes.
